Review the evidence for the loss of forest species and variability within species caused by habitat fragmentation. I have scanned recent literature on forest fragmentation, looking at spatial factors (size of fragment in relation to species' studied, isolation, fragment shape, etc.) and temporal ones IF given in the study. Also, I have noted the indicator species used to assess effects of habitat fragmentation, and aim to discuss drawbacks of some of the species used (e.g., birds, especially migrant spp., and specialist versus generalist mammal or bird species) and the scale at which fragmentation may affect species ecology and reproductive biology (daisies versus trees in Australia). I am also looking generally at the literature on deforestation and species' loss, although without a focus on fragmentation, some of these studies are difficult to use for this essay.
