Since water is essence of life, one would expect the lake ecosystem to be a diverse and thriving environment teeming with life. And while this is true in most cases, the Great Salt Lake in Utah is an exception to this rule. While many of the physical and chemical properties of this lake are similar to other lakes, the extremely high salinity level of the Great Salt Lake makes life impossible for many organisms that are commonly found inhabiting other lakes. It is also important to note that the Great Salt Lake is unique in another aspect-in 1959 a railroad causeway was completed that split the Great Salt Lake into to two disproportional sections labeled the North and South Arms.
