Is The Study of Cats and Dogs Relevant to Psychology? The study of animal behaviour was first inspired by Charles Darwin (1859) who is famous for his theory of evolution. He said that by studying species that we have evolved from, we should learn more about ourselves. Cats and dogs may show more simple behaviours than humans and have a less complex nervous system, but due to ethics, we can carry out surgical procedures and other experiments much easier on them than we can on humans and, therefore, use the results from theses studies for medical and psychological knowledge. Due to the evolutionary link between humans and other species, it is important to study the simpler cases in order to understand the more complex ones.
