FUR - THE NEW BLACK? Fashion gurus are proclaiming the return of fur to the high street. Once, a fur coat symbolised the essence of glamour. A mink coat or an arctic fox fur represented the most desired item a woman could possess and to wear it was like wearing her success for the world to admire. Attitudes changed in the 1980s when women wearing fur were spat on or splattered in red paint. They became hate figures rather than admired. Every year the fur industry claims that; 'fur is back' although, until now, this has remained wishful thinking. Worldwide fur sales were highest in 1987 and have dropped dramatically since. 'In the late 80s fur sales plummeted by 50%' says Andrew Butler spokesman of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
