Are animal's conscious means whether or to what extent the animal is aware of itself Questions about self-consciousness and theory of mind in animals are a matter of active scientific controversy, with the most attention focused on chimpanzees and to a more limited extent on the other great apes. Gallup did an experiment on chimpanzees and orang-utans, he painted a red dot on their forehead and then showed them a mirror, when they saw their reflection they rubbed the paint of their forehead showing that they new they were looking at themselves. In contrast monkeys did not, they will touch paint on other parts of their body but when shown a mirror they don't do anything. Paint was also painted on dogs and cats foreheads, when they were shown a mirror they just clawed at it like they were meeting a strange member of their species or sex. According...
