In the 16th century the French Philosopher Rene Descartes suggested that non-human animals could not reason and therefore do not feel pain (All, 1998).Yet still, others were not convinced of this theory and criticized the moral integrity of such claims. In defense of animals, Jeremy Bentham states: "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk?, but, can they suffer?
