Animals in Research: Animals in Cosmetic Testing - Corporate Crime? In the 16th century the French Philosopher Rene Descartes suggested that non-human animals could not reason and therefore do not feel pain (All, 1998).Yet still, others were not convinced of this theory and criticized the moral integrity of such claims. In defense of animals, Jeremy Bentham states: "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk?, but, can they suffer? (All, 1998)" In the modern era, the twin forces of technology and science coupled with the growth of capitalism fuels the ongoing debate as to whether animals should be used in research.
