Animals and Heat loss Introduction. During this piece of coursework we will be investigating how the surface area to volume ratio affects heat loss in various sized animals. We are investigating why it is the smaller animals that hibernate, or fly somewhere warmer in the winter. Small animals cannot generate enough heat in the winter to survive, this is why they hibernate, what we want to find out is why the larger animals don't do the same. Aim. Our aim during this piece of coursework is to find out exactly why the smaller animals, and not the larger animals, hibernate during winter. Plan. Our plan is to take 5 glass beakers, each a different size, (1000ml, 600ml, 400ml, 250ml and 100ml), and fill each beaker with the same amount percentage of water, with the same size measuring beaker so we know this aspect of the experiment will be fair.
