Merit part two Many eastern Africans live at altitude which means that there bodies have naturally adapted so that they are able to breathe easier. This will mean that eastern Africans have a larger lung capacity making them able to breathe better. Having a larger lung capacity makes them excel in sports where good aerobic endurance is needed. In long distance running events such as the marathon and the 10000 metres eastern Africans usually win. They also have a large proportion of slow twitch fibres which means that there muscular endurance will be better. There muscles will be able to keep working for longer than other races. This again makes them at an advantage in long distance running events. There body make up also makes them have a large number of red blood cells.
