The word "Paralympic" means 'next to' or 'parallel' to the Olympic Games. The paralympics are to athletes with disabilities what the Olympics are to able-bodied athletes. It is a showcase of individual talent and national pride. Paralympic athletes are classified according to their disabilities. The classifications include: amputee, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, wheelchair, visual impairment and other conditions. The Paralympics have always been played in the same year as the Olympics. Beginning with the Seoul summer Olympics of 1988 and the Albertville winter Olympics of 1992, the Paralympics have mostly been played in the same venues as the Olympics.
