Prevalence of Injury in Collegiate Wrestling Kyle Ricord ATTH 491 - Dale Butterwick November 5, 2002 Introduction Wrestling is unique among collegiate athletics. It is an ancient form of competition that is both combative and intellectual. These, and other aspects, are what captivate those who choose to participate. Wrestling has one of the highest participant rates across the world (Jarrett, Orwin and Dick, 1998). The National Federation of State High School Associations' 1998 Sports Participation Survey found that the sport of wrestling ranked sixth in the number of male participants (229,176) and eighth in the number of schools participating (8900). At a cost of its popularity (or perhaps as the cause of its popularity) is the high incidence of injury incurred in a combative sport. Wrestling has always ranked high in overall injury rates compared with other sports, ranking no less than fourth in most published studies (Pasque and Hewett, 2000). Beachy et al., (1997)...
