Football Culture FOOTBALL CULTURE: Culture is the sum total of all contributions of a group of people, in a designated area. It represents a life-style of a society as passed on from generation to generation. In a broader sense, it refers to all distinctively human activities. The part of American culture I have decided to tell you about is American college football. Soccer and rugby flourished in Great Britain and the elements of soccer were brought to America by the colonists, and those of rugby by the immigrants of the mid 19th century. Elements from the two games were gradually blended and out of this mixture came a new and distinct sport, American football, which would grow from casual intramural games on the campuses of eastern colleges in the mid-1850's to the complex and compelling sport played in the huge stadiums of the 1900's.
