In 1997 the government set out plans to make secondary schools become specialist colleges improving the learning and teaching in schools. A school can become one of ten specialisms and they are; * Technology College * Language College * Arts College * Sports College * Science College * Maths and Computing College * Business and Enterprise College * Engineering College * Humanities College * Music College As a result of this plan so far there are 1,686 specialist colleges, 54% of all the secondary schools. 'Specialist Sports Colleges will play an important role in helping to deliver the Government's Plan for Sport. They will become important hub sites for school and community sport providing high quality opportunities for all young people in their neighbourhood' Richard Caborn MP, Minister for Sport, DCMS.
