Introduction Anabolic steroids sometimes referred to as roids or juice is synthetic hormones that cause the body to produce muscle and prevent muscle breakdown. The word "anabolic" is derived from a Greek word that means to "build up." (Reynolds, W., & Weider, J., 1999) Steroids were developed in the 1930s to help aging men maintain strength or to raise levels of naturally occurring testosterone (primarily to treat hypogonadism.) In the 1950s, athletes began using anabolic steroids after witnessing the domination of East Europeans and Soviets in an international sports event. It was later discovered that these athletes had used steroids. ( Kuipers, H. 1998) Anabolic which is androgenic steroids which are a man-made substance which relates to male sex hormones. "Anabolic" is to build the muscle, and "androgenic" refers to increased masculine characteristics. "Steroids" refers to the class of drugs.
