SO Gwen Harwood said of the character of Krote whom she depicted as having aspired in his youth to be a concert pianist, only to be resigned to perform unapplauded at social functions in an 'ignorant town' as a recent migrant to Australia from Eastern Europe. 'Nightfall' a melancholy poem in which Krote contemplates his lost opportunities in conjunction with 'the Flying Goddess', which details a drunk Krote at a salon, and his experience with a child in imagination and reality in 'Monday' are poems in which his appearance, behavior, language and representation of a stereotype culminate to present his characters particular construction.
