Discuss the different theories regarding the causes of phobias. In this essay I intend to describe the main phobias that affect people; social and specific. Then discuss the different theories regarding the causes of phobias. Phobias affect 4 million people in Britain, although there's a large population affected, there is however a general lack of understanding about phobias and especially about their causes. The word 'phobia' comes from the Greek Phobos, which means extreme fear, terror. It is an excessive, irrational and uncontrollable fear of situations or objects. It can trigger feelings of acute panic causing sweating, palpitations, faintness, and paralysis of movement. Phobics suffer from such sensations whenever they are in the situation they fear. (Iris Health, 2006) The major phobias are specific and social phobias. Social phobias are excessive fear of embarrassment in social situations.
