ABSTRACT This study is based on the study carried out by Murstein (1972) into the Matching Hypothesis stating that people are likely to choose a partner who of a similar level of attractiveness as themselves for a long term romantic relationship. In order to investigate this, photos were taken of the males and females in eight different couples attending the same sixth form at a school in Hertfordshire. These photos were then ranked on physical attractiveness from 1 to 8 by twenty secondary school teachers, between the ages of 30 and 45, who were unaware of the nature of the study. The ranks photos of the males and females in each couple were compared using inferential statistics. A spearman's rank co-efficient was used to find whether the results obtained were significant.
