Lab Report Intoduction Research has failed to accurately distinguish between the terms arousal and activation. Several habituation response theories such as Gray 1981, Sokolov (1960) and Groves and Thompson (1970) have failed to clearly identify defining components, or constructs, of arousal and activation. The question of whether these two phenomenons should be understood in separate contexts has raised concerns as to the reliablitlty of the techniques used to measure such phenomena. In current literature electrodermal activity in the form of skin conductance levels (SCL), is the standard for measuring activation and arousal. SCL indicates an output from the autonomic nervous sytem (Wallis, 1981; Hoeldtke et al, 1992) and is considered a peripheral measure of primarily physiological arousal (Raine et al 1990). Cerebral (EEG) and autonomic measures (SCL) associated with arousal have by in large been researched idependantly of each other (Daniel, 1966).
