Student NO: 999311199 THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRIOR EXPERIENCE AND SOLVING ANAGRAMS This research looked at the effects of experience and sought to establish whether success or failure of earlier tasks influenced succeeding abilities to solve anagrams. Thirty participants were chosen randomly and asked to solve a series of conundrums. Analysis of group data, using an independent design called the One-way ANOVA, gave evidence to reject the hypothesis that 'prior (success/failure) experience of anagram solving does affect subsequent solving performance'. The main conclusion drawn was that there were no results to give evidence that prior experience affects further performance. INTRODUCTION This piece of research is based on previous work around learned helplessness. Seligman (1974, 1975 cited in Gross, 1992) conducted experiments on two groups of dogs, one of which were given a series of inescapable painful shocks.
