Running Head: SEX DIFFERENCES IN AROUSAL Sex Differences in Arousal Response to Pornographic Scripts Abstract Sex differences in arousal response to pornographic scripts among 108 (73 female and 35 male) heterosexual San Francisco State students were investigated. Participants completed a survey containing general attitudinal questions about pornography and then read 6 short erotic stories, self-reporting their levels of arousal in response to each on a semantic differential scale. No significant differences were found in the way males and females self-reported arousal levels. However, considerable differences were found in the styles of pornography preferred and the frequency with which pornography was sought out. As hypothesized, males preferred more explicit pornographic styles, described as "hard-core" while females preferred a "romantic" pornographic style. This study questions the popular notion that only men seek out and enjoy pornography to enhance their sexual arousal, while women find it degrading and disgusting.
