Outline and evaluate the use of focus groups as a research method Focus groups until recently have been under-used in social research, although they have a long history in market research and more recently they have been used to test political opinion in Britain. In this essay I aim to examine the value of focus groups as a tool for social researchers. I will begin by outlining focus groups and go on to evaluate the use of focus groups as a research method concluding with the limitations and advantages of using focus groups as a social research method. The main purpose of focus group research is to draw upon the respondents' attitudes, feelings, beliefs, experiences and reactions in a way in which would not be practical using other methods, for example observation, one-to-one interviewing, or questionnaire surveys (quantitative and qualitative methods).
