How do we recognise objects? A small-scale study into the process of object recognition Abstract This small scale study replicated an earlier more detailed study by Humphreys et al. (1978) investigating object recognition of words and pictures. Humphreys compared recognition times of structurally similar words and pictures and structurally different words and pictures and found that reaction times for structurally similar objects were longer due to conflicting information, supporting his cascade model of object recognition. Evidence from Potter & Faulconer(1975) suggests that words would be named quicker than pictures which involves an extra stage in the recognition process. There are 3 hypotheses in this related 2-way study. Hypothesis 1 states that participants will require less time to read words than to name pictures. Hypothesis 2 states that participants will take less time to name items from structurally distinct categories than items from structurally similar categories.
