Using a range of examples, describe the purpose and role of play in the home, nursery and pre-school, and its influence on holistic development of the child. Play is now seen as an integral factor in aiding children's development. Many psychologists and theorists have studied play including, Piaget, Bruner, Vygotsky, Isaacs, Montessori, Froebel and McMillan. There has been much argument about the importance of play as a method of learning, but it is now widely seen as one of primary needs of a child. Play is something that children want to do naturally, and actually occurs throughout our lives, although, the form in which it takes varies as we grow older.
