Describe the term attachment. According to Bowlby what is the significance of attachment in child development? Attachment theory is the developing relationship established between a primary caregiver and an infant. The importance of this attachment was originally uncovered by psychoanalyst John Bowlby (1969, 1973, 1980) and through his work he demonstrated to understand the distress experienced by infants who had been separated from their primary caregiver. Bowlby believed that, not only, are infants genetically programmed to depend on the mother to guarantee survival but that infants showed signs of becoming attached to one particular adult usually who was the primary feeder, protector and comfort provider, a term and inclination Bowlby referred to as monotropy, arriving that, "Mother love in infancy is as important for mental health as vitamins and proteins for physical health" (1951).
