Discuss the development of nonverbal communication in humans. Many academics argue that nonverbal communication is present at birth, however some argue that, like many other behaviours, it is learnt during infancy. This essay will discuss the development of nonverbal communication in humans. The essay will begin with a definition of the term 'communication' and will also define the term 'nonverbal communication'. The essay will then briefly describe the main gestures associated with nonverbal communication before going on to discuss some of the major research that has been undertaken to determine how nonverbal communication develops. The essay will discuss the research suggesting that nonverbal communication is innate as well as discussing the research that suggests that it is a learnt behaviour. The essay will try to argue that nonverbal communication is an innate ability rather than a learnt behaviour.
