Language acquisition theories are centered on the nature and nurture debate or 'nativism' and 'empiricism'. The speed at which language is attained has caused many theorists to believe that language must be in built into the brain. Others believe that language is learned from all around us. The Nativist approach asserts that acquiring language is 'innate' in humans. It is part of the genetic makeup and independent of any experiences which may occur from birth.
