Abstract The aim of the current research is to explore how a middle-aged married couple's experiences differed from their childrens' experiences and the influence that the context of a person's life has. In this study a qualitative thematic analysis was carried out on pre-existing material of three semi-structured interviews. Three main themes were identified: losses and gains, cultural-historical influences and independence. This analysis showed support for some research done regarding developmental contexualism, particularly regarding Bronfenbrenner and Lerner's theories. The findings suggest that variables influencing an individual's experiences cannot be seen in isolation, but are indeed interlinked. Thus, the context of a person's life affects their development.
