Adolescent development: Do parents matter? As children grow older, and start to mature, they enter the period of growth called adolescence. Adolescence has been known to be described as a 'mental illness' because of the difficulty in adapting to the many changes. The adolescent has to complete developmental tasks to be able to mature healthily, which is critical for the individual's future life. One of the differences between adolescence and childhood is the relationship with parents. Parents are a large part of the growing child's life, from influence on peer selection to acting as a model for alcohol use and abuse. Parents are a large part of most adolescents lives. There are several different types of parenting, for instance overprotecting, underdominating, overdominating and underappreciating. These different parenting methods have different effect on the adolescents, which can effect their development and also what type of person they turn into. ...
