Author: Cecilia Moore Student Number: 305175270 Date: 20/09/05 Abstract In this study we attempted to distinguish between the related processes of the working memory and reasoning ability. An experimental task, the Graeco-Latin Squares (GLS), was presented on computer to half the Psychology student participants who were not allowed to write and then presented to the other half on paper with writing allowed. Each student was set fifteen items ranging in difficulty and working memory demand. The computerised group attempted a significantly greater number of GLS items than did the paper and pencil group. The mean percent of GLS items correct of those attempted was significantly greater in the pencil and paper group, reflecting a decrease in demand on the working memory capacity.
