It is therefore no surprise that several theories have been suggested in an attempt to explain comprehension failure in reading. The purpose of Cain's (1999) study was to examine the relationship between children's levels of reading comprehension, their knowledge about the goals and processes of reading and the skills they use to apply that knowledge.
