Redefining Creativity as a Function of Metacognitive Processes And the Role of Autonoetic Consciousness How do people come up with creative solutions? What is creativity? The classical definition is "the ability to produce work that is both novel and appropriate" (c, 1994). I would like to challenge the view of appropriateness as a defining feature and argue that creativity constitutes a set of processes distinct from general problem-solving and reasoning, which are primarily oriented towards obtaining appropriate results. Creativity involves generation of many unconventional ideas for a solution and this generation is necessarily mediated by routine problem-solving skills such as problem formulation, choosing useful problem representation, etc (Lubart, 1994); but also by other processes specific to creative work. That is, there must be interaction between creativity and routine problem-solving to lead to optimal creative performance but creativity and routine problem-solving are not the same.
