Outline one theory of forgetting and describe strategies that can be used to reduce forgetting. Memory was first explored by Ebbinghaus (1885), who introduced the idea of the three basic processes of memory. He defined encoding as the process of receiving information and changing it to a format transferable to memory, storage as the process of keeping that information in the memory and retrieval as the process of recalling the information from memory. Psychologists have since investigated memory further, developing many theories as to what memory consists of, how it works and why we can't always remember information (forgetting). Models of memory, for example the Atkinson and Schriffin two-process memory model (1968), derived from the theories of James (1890), prompted research into the inability to retrieve information.
