Is attention merely a matter of selection? The study of attention has always been of great interest to psychologist. A significant amount of research has been done on attention in relationship to selection. As Pashler (1998) pointed out, "Attention has long posed a major challenge for psychologists." Attention is "the act of concentration on any one of a set of any subjects or thoughts". (Collins dictionary). One sub section of attention is selective attention, which is "the process by which a person can selectively pick out one message from a mixture of messages occuring simultaneously" (Collins dictionary). As the word suggests, in the case of selective attention, attention is a matter of selection. But there are many other kinds of attention.
