How can we measure abilities of children? This essay will discuss how the abilities of children can be measured, focusing on key findings by Piaget among others. In terms of defining ability, according to the English Oxford dictionary, it is a "quality that makes an action or process possible, power to do something, cleverness". Many of the tests conducted by psychologists have focused on mental abilities, and how the brain affects our performance on a range of tasks. In regards to measuring abilities in infants, Neligan (1968) studies the age at which infants passed 'milestones' (discontinuous change) such as sitting and walking unsupported, and the infant's first word and sentence. Neligan found 50% of infants were able to sit unsupported at 6.4 months, and 97% at 9.3 months.
