Discuss the Theories of Memory In Psychology, memory plays a hugely important role, and psychologists have worked for years, studying and developing new theories of how memory works, and how it is that we can store memories and information differently for prolonged periods of time. The three main theories of learning are: * The multi-store model of memory - developed by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968. * Levels of processing - developed by Craik and Lockhart in 1972. * The working memory model - developed by Baddeley in 1986. The multi-store model is probably the most well known model of memory. It explains that human memory involves a sequence of three stages. The first of these stages is Sensory memory (SM). It is the temporary store for information, which is then processed and passed on to short term memory.
