Describe the various ways in which psychologists have attempted to define intelligence? Intelligence has often been used to select applicants for jobs or to select students for universities. However, the statistical definition of intelligence has varied from psychologist to psychologist. Most people would associate the terms smart, bright and clever to intelligent people. On the other hand, the terms dull, slow and dim-witted have been used to describe those that are considered less intelligent. It is very difficult to define exactly what intelligence is. Some researchers describe it as the capacity for abstract thinking, while others see it as the ability to acquire new abilities or new knowledge. There are also some who would define it as the ability to adopt new situations (Gleitman, 1999) Although no single definition of intelligence has been accepted by all, this has not stopped people developing intelligence tests.
