Describe and evaluate one study from the cognitive developmental approach. Modes of representation is a key study in the cognitive developmental approach. Bruner proposed a theory, which suggested that children's cognitive development progresses through three modes of representation; enactive, iconic and symbolic. The study was researches by Bruner and Kenney in 1966. They showed the differences between a child using an iconic mode, where the chid represents the world through means of images and a child using a symbolic mode of representation. Bruner and Kenney came up with the idea that the iconic mode of representation is what the younger children use. Whereas the symbolic mode of representation is used by the older children.
