Definitions of terms containing the morph, morph The morpheme is described as being "the minimal distinctive unit of grammar". It is also characterised as being the focal point of the study of morphology. The term was brought into use in order to replace the term word. This was due to the difficulty in assigning different languages words. The term word was also more than necessary to define the smallest unit of grammar, because it is so much more. Morphemes are the building blocks of words and are grouped into free forms, morphemes that can be words in their own right, and bound forms, which cannot. As such the word unconsciously is made of three morphemes: un- and -ly, which are bound forms and conscious, a free form one. Unconsciously is also a polymorphic word, because it contains more than one morpheme. Monomorphic words, of course, only have one morpheme. Morphemes...
