Discuss the importance of the role played by schemata in our social lives This essay will attempt to examine the extent schemata play in our social lives. A schema is a mental structure that represents some aspects of the world. Schemas are used to organize current knowledge and provide a framework for future understanding. They also help us to have a better understanding of the world. Furthermore they also play a very important part in social cognition which is concerned with how people think about other people or other ethic groups. Konecny (2000) Social cognition tries to seek explanations for our own behaviour and the behaviour of others. Furthermore it is also concerned with the tendency to take mental shortcuts in processing information from our social world. Schwartz (1998) One of the avoidable consequences of the process of categorization is the fact that we will judge some people more negatively than others....
