How do different explanations of dyslexia suggest contrasting approaches to the treatment/management of dyslexia? Reaching an acceptable definition of dyslexia is a controversial process which is illustrative of the contentious nature of defining 'normal' and hence 'abnormal' behaviour. Popular scientific opinion has evolved over the years; original definitions were based on exclusion criteria, and are now based on the discrepancy between potential and actual literacy ability, and identification of positive indicators. Essentially dyslexia is a label used to describe a condition involving but not confined to specific difficulties in learning to read and write. Explanations of dyslexia vary according to different psychological perspectives and consequently propose contrasting approaches to the treatment and/or management of the condition.
