Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) Avian influenza was first detected in 1997 among a group of chickens that had inherited the virus. The virus is highly contagious among wild birds and often fatal to domesticated birds and poultry. It has killed 60 people in Southeast Asia since 2003, however over 100 cases of human infection have been reported since 1997. The virus is transmitted to humans through direct contact with saliva from infected birds or through contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces. Obtaining the virus from person to person is a rare case. Infected birds pass the virus in their saliva, feces, and nasal secretions. Symptoms of avian influenza range from the fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and eye infections to more serious conditions such as pneumonia and acute respiratory distress.
