Did HIV Originate in African Green Monkeys? What is Human Immunodeficiency Virus? Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus which is part of a larger group called retroviruses. Lentiviruses are slow acting viruses and take a long time to produce any adverse effects in the body. These viruses infect and normally kill the helper T-lymphocytes that are a vital part of the immune system. This therefore greatly impairs the immune system and may lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, the HIV virus can also exist in a dormant state in T cells as a provirus until it is activated and enters the lytic cycle. The existence of this dormant state makes it difficult to design an effective strategy to over come the HIV virus in an infected individual.
