DNA fingerprinting otherwise known as DNA profiling / typing or identification is what differentiates between people (or any animal) due to the order of their base pairs. In order to understand this fully, we firstly have to consider what exactly is DNA and how DNA fingerprinting is linked to practical applications in everyday life. What is DNA? DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is a chemical structure that forms chromosomes and a piece of chromosome that dictates a particular trait is called a gene. A DNA structure is a double helix meaning that two strands of genetic material are spiralled around each other. Each strand contains a sequence of bases called nucleotides. In DNA a base is one of four chemicals: adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine.
