AGRI-TECH INDUSTRY OVERVIEW 1.0 INTRODUCTION This report will focus on the applications of biotechnology in agriculture. Agriculture is a rapidly changing industry. With more people to feed and less land on which to do it the governments of the world are looking at ways in which to increase crop and animal yields. Agricultural biotechnology (or agbio) is a collection of scientific techniques, which includes genetic engineering (GE), which are used to create, improve or modify plants or animals. The improvements in GE have allowed the farmer greater freedom to use crop protection products, in some cases the crop has been genetically altered so that the pesticide doesn't damage it, in others they eliminate the needs for pesticides altogether. The animal science industry made worldwide headlines a few years ago when Scottish scientists successfully cloned 'Dolly' the sheep.
