Public sector investment by the UK government, already responsible for between 40-50% of work in the industry, has enabled companies to start planning for the medium term with some confidence. This should result in a more favourable environment for recruitment and training. UK construction is not isolated from external economic uncertainties. Overall output is estimated to have increased by over 7% in 2002, but there are some signs that growth is slowing in the private and commercial sectors.
