WHY DID WARDOWN DEVELOP IN THE WAY IT DID? Luton has developed drastically through the years. Many years ago Luton was rural and undeveloped. Luton was mainly farmland it had no form of public transport. In 1332 the Crawley's who are known for their wealth and for their property all over the country were the lords of the manor. There were about 22 manors in the area of Luton the Crawley family owned Someries and Stockwood in 1740 john Crawley built a magnificent mansion at the manor of stockwood on the southern outskirts of Luton. The rest of Luton was mainly rural with agriculture, straw plaiting and straw making were the main areas of employment. In 1844 Luton was still very rural and undeveloped Luton's landscape had stayed the same for quite a while. Richard Howe owned a plot of land on the northern outskirts of Luton he also owned...
