What were the origins of the garden city movement? On what underlying principals was the garden city based and how far did the movement influence urban development up to 1939? A garden city as described by the garden city movement is: "A town designated for healthy living and industry, of a size which makes possible a full measure of social life, but no larger: surrounded by a rural belt: the whole of the land being in public ownership or held in trust for the community". Ebenezer Howard was the brainchild of the garden city movement. He was born in 1850 and worked in the USA, Nebraska, Chicago 1871 - 1876. In 1876 he was made Parliamentary Reporter and was influenced by Radical Philosophy, which saw the class struggle as evil.
