Urban planning in Hungary from a sociological viewpoint Paper for the ENHR New Researchers' Conference Cambridge June 2004 Lea Koszeghy PhD student Faculty of Social Sciences ELTE, Budapest, Hungary Urban planning is one of the most important frameworks of housing policies, especially urban renewal programmes, so it is worth to have a view on how planning operates. In order to have this view I recommend a sociological viewpoint, according to the approach of Jirí Musil and Iván Szelényi. They percieve two possible roles for sociology in urban planning. First, sociology for urban planning, in this case sociology takes part in the planning process with its special knowledge and methodology, e.g. providing demographic forecasts, conducting opinion polls etc. Second, the sociology of urban planning, which percieves urban planning as a multi-actor process, and analyses which actors do play a role, what kind of values and interests do they represent, how do they interact, what kinds of conflicts emerge....
