It is described as a place on no map, lying outside civilization, behind mountains that lead to the ancient city of Riohacha, a place that many years ago was home to the Buendia ancestors. For years, the town has no contact with the outside world, except for the gypsies who occasionally visit, introducing a host of fabulous things - flying carpets, magnets, daguerreotypes, ice, telescopes, and so on.
