The Buddha of Suburbia is essentially a novel about characters changing their lives. The novel is distinct in that half of it takes place in the suburbs preparing for Karim and his father? move to the city. In the first half of the novel all of the characters are to a certain extent discontent with their lives in the suburbs. The suburbs are a place to move on from or to change. The characters who move on from the suburbs, namely Charlie, Eva and Karim find new lives and identities for themselves through money and fame in London. Anwar and Haroon are unable to feel completely at ease in either the suburbs or the city, while those who stay in the suburbs, Jamila, Changez and Margaret, change their lives by changing themselves which is perhaps easier in a place like the suburbs where nothing changes.
