Public Transport in the Early Ages - Pre-war Period 1 Early Transport In the first few decades of British occupation, the territory of Hong Kong only consisted ofthe Hong Kong Island (ceded in 1842 by the Treaty of Nanking after the First Opium War)and the Kowloon Peninsula (ceded in 1860 by the Treaty of Peking after the Second Opium War). The New Territories was not a part of the colony of Hong Kong until 1898. It was"leased" by the Imperial Chinese Government to the British Government for 99 years. As a result, most of the early developments were concentrated on the Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. Also because of "the mountainous nature of Hong Kong Island and the New Territories, most of the earliest inhabitants clustered on the north shore of the Island and on the Kowloon Peninsula."
